MC Astro is the first artist / MC I personally ever worked with – we were in a group together way back in the early 2000’s called DAP (Dirty Alien Project), which eventually evolved into the first iteration of Poor Vida. Denzil is also one of the few artists I continued working with in the background even after Poor Vida’s record label days folded up shop. So it was a no brainer that if we’re gonna do a Mixtape of hot sauces, MC Astro is gonna be a part of it. Before I even called him to discuss, I was already looking into something I could use to make a reference to his home state of Minnesota, and I found it right away. Blueberry Mustard (not the hot sauce) is a definite Minnesota thing, and it let me lean into designing a hot sauce based on a color again – this time Purple (Go Vikings!). Astro was into it, and wanted it hot, so I knocked out a couple versions with Serranos to keep it dark and hot, and trying to color it with the blueberries. It turned out that cooking those blueberries killed the color, so I tried a version with some red beets, and it was fire! We added a little Bird’s Eye Chilis and Cayenne Pepper to make it even hotter, and Blueberry Mustard was done!

This replaces all 4 of the mustards I usually have in the fridge. Bonus tip – use this hot sauce as your wet base on a rack of ribs before adding your dry rub.
